Rafi and Rosi

I've always loved the adorable and elusive coquí tree frogs found in my island of Puerto Rico. One day, out of boredom, I started sketching coquíes. I sketched these critters over and over until Rafi and Rosi were born. I knew the stories would be about a sibling relationship.

Rafi's antics are modeled after my husband's when he was a young boy growing up in Puerto Rico. Rosi has a little of me in her. The stories are set in Puerto Rico and share the island's natural beauty, culture and traditions.

To create the art I used a sepia watercolor pencil for the outlines of my characters.
Then I filled the shapes with Windsor and Newton watercolors. The sepia line bled a little into the body of the tree frogs, giving my characters warmth.
